What You Can (and Shouldn’t) Compost: A Simple Guide for Busy Humans

Starting a compost system can feel overwhelming when you're not sure what belongs in it — or what doesn’t. But once you learn a few basics, it becomes second nature. Composting isn’t about perfection — it’s about consistency, curiosity, and care.

Here’s a quick breakdown to get you started:

✅ YES: Compost These!

  • Fruit & vegetable scraps (peels, cores, rinds)

  • Coffee grounds and filters

  • Eggshells

  • Tea bags (check for plastic-free bags)

  • Paper towels, napkins, and cardboard (uncoated)

  • Leaves, flowers, and indoor plant trimmings

  • Shredded newspaper

🚫 NO: Do Not Compost These!

  • Pet waste or litter

  • Glossy or coated paper (magazines, receipts)

  • Plastic, foil, or synthetic materials

Compost Tip: Think “natural, plant-based, and unprocessed.” If it came from the earth and hasn’t been chemically treated, it’s probably compostable.
